About us

Members of the Bangladeshi community founded Bangladesh Community Development, (BCD) in 1994 to address the difficulties encountered by British-Bangladeshis in Birmingham. BCD supports the Bangladesh community with projects that offer educational support to students of all ages; raise educational awareness among Bangladeshi and other Asian parents; provide the opportunity for Bangladeshi children to learn their mother tongue, and unemployed Bangladeshis with vocational training, employment related training courses and career development courses. These courses, run by BCD, improve people's self esteem and confidence enabling them to make informed decisions on issues that affect them and their families and to integrate and progress in all areas of their lives.

BCD works in partnership with mainstream primary and secondary schools, and with colleges of higher education in Birmingham, providing educational support for students of Bangladeshi origin. BCD currently runs six community projects: Young Persons Work, Outreach Education Project, Supplementary School, Bangladeshi Festival, Bengal Tigers Cricket Club and Sylhet Tigers Football Club. Over the last six years BCD has provided additional education for almost 1000 youngsters, of whom over 100 have received nationally recognised qualifications. These figures need to keep increasing. In 1995, surveys revealed that young Bangladeshi's were consistently underachieving compared to other Asian children. It is the on-going commitment of BCD to address these problems.

If you would like to find out more about the projects please contact the BCD Team on 0121 359 8540 or email information@bcd.org.uk
