Bangladeshi Festival

The annual celebration includes music, dance, exhibitions, cuisine, fashion show, sports, careers and many other events reflecting the best of Bangladeshi arts and culture and offers a huge range of opportunities for young people across the city.

The Bangladeshi Festival:

  • Provides the people in Britain with an unprecedented opportunity to experience, appreciate and understand the education, arts and culture of Bangladeshi people.
  • Raises awareness about Bangladesh amongst the British people.
  • Provides information on education opportunities for further understanding of the people, culture, history and contemporary life of Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi Festival 2001

Held on Sunday 1st July, the Bangladeshi Festival, the biggest celebration of modern Bangladeshi culture the Midlands has seen, moved to its new home in the heart of Birmingham. Aston University hosted the carnival celebration which is estimated to have drawn five thousand people countrywide. It featured over 25 exhibitions that covered music, dance, fashion, careers and commerce, creating a fusion of the very best of Bangladeshi arts and culture.

MUSIC AND DANCE

Art Students from Joseph Chamberlain College performed music, dance and displayed carnival costumes. Mukthy '71, an emerging Bangladeshi group sang popular Bengali songs.

Internationally reputed artists ANUP BISWAS - solo cello (he performed in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the HRH Duke of Edinburgh at the Commonwealth Institute, London.) KAR GUPTA - Vocal (awarded the 'Sangeet Prabhakar','Sangeet Visharad' and 'Sangeet Bhushan', three of the most prestigious distinctions of Music in India) and SUJATA BANERJEE - Kathak Dancer (she is one of the most acclaimed artists of the Commonwealth Institute's Education Department) performed popular Bengali songs.

FASHION SHOW

The latest Bangladeshi and Asian fashions were paraded on the catwalk by professional models.
